Southpaw is a small book of words and pictures recalling the lives and careers of 25 compelling lefties in the world of sports. It was written and illustrated in 2012 by me, Aaron Dana. I've chosen to make all the content available on this page. If you like this project, click on the orange "E" icon below- it will take you to my Etsy store where you're likely to find more things that will amuse and delight.
I hope you enjoy Southpaw as much as I enjoyed making it!
I have a really hard time deciding which Wade Boggs I want to remember. Option A is the spray hitter of my youth who couldn’t be kept off base, proudly sporting my hometown “B” on his helmet. Option B is the jackass riding the horse around Yankee Stadium. Option C is the greasy and allegedly racist sex fiend of Margo Adams infamous Penthouse disclosure. Honestly, not the best set of options. While the truth likely lies somewhere in between, one thing’s for certain- the “Chicken Man” was really, really good at hitting a baseball. From 1982-1988, Boggs hit below .349 only once, while rolling out 7 straight seasons of 200+ hits from 1983-1989. The man was a machine and has the rare distinction of being the only Red Sox player to ever give me an autograph inside the walls of Fenway Park. Can you blame me for not wanting to hate the guy? Instead, I think I’ll choose to remember him as the guy who purportedly drank 50-70 Miller Lites from clubhouse to clubhouse on cross-country road trips.
